Facebook to make London as base for WhatsApp Payments

Facebook will make London as a base for the global roll-out of its digital payments service, before launching WhatsApp Pay in India.

Facebook to make London base for WhatsApp Payments

Facebook, the social media giant has made London as a base for the global roll-out of its digital payments service, before launching WhatsApp Pay in India. According to the Financial Times report on Wednesday, WhatsApp will be hiring almost 100 people in London to focus on digital payments service along with additional operations staff that could be hired in Dublin.

Right now, WhatsApp has 1.5 billion global users that include over 300 million in India. According to the report, the new highly skilled technical engineering staff will be building a payment function as well as products that focus on safety and spam on apps.

Matthew Idema, WhatsApp's Chief Operating Officer, was quoted who said, "WhatsApp is a truly global service and these teams will help us provide WhatsApp payments and other great features for our users everywhere."

Globally, WhatsApp almost has 400 employees globally. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made an announcement on 224th April that the company actively is working on to launch WhatsApp Pay in India.

He further said during the earnings call with analysts, "We have a test that is running in India for WhatsApp now, we're hoping to launch in several other countries at some point, but I don't want to put a timeframe on that here, but it's something that we're actively working on".

The WhatsApp Pay in India has been tested by almost one million people that lets people send money to each other in a simple and secure way.

The company told the Supreme Court on 3rd May that it would comply with Reserve Bank of India data localisation norms, before launching the full payment service in India.
