In a tragic incident, at least nine people lost their lives in an explosion at a fireworks factory near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. The explosion occurred at a fireworks manufacturing unit located near Sivakasi, known as the fireworks hub of India. The blast also left twelve others with burn injuries, as reported by the police. Notably, the factory was operating with a valid license at the time of the incident. Law enforcement agencies have initiated an investigation to determine the cause behind the explosion, probing into potential factors that led to the tragic event.

Sivakasi: Hub of fireworks production

Sivakasi, renowned as India's fireworks manufacturing hub, plays a pivotal role in the nation's production of firecrackers, safety matches, and stationery items. The incident has cast a somber shadow over the bustling industrial town.

Details of the incident

The accident occurred near Sengamalapatti in Sivakasi, with eight workers, including five women and three men, losing their lives in the devastating fire. Authorities confirmed that seven rooms storing firecrackers were destroyed in the blaze.

Rescue efforts and investigation

Prompt response from police and fire service personnel led to the swift evacuation of the injured to the government hospital in Sivakasi. The cause of the fire is under investigation, although officials have confirmed that the unit was licensed.

Government response

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed deep condolences and directed district authorities to provide necessary medical care to the injured and ensure every effort to save lives. More than ten injured individuals received medical attention, with the Chief Minister emphasising the importance of life-saving treatment for all victims.

Presidential condolences

President Droupadi Murmu expressed sadness over the tragedy, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. "Saddened to learn about the loss of many lives due to an explosion at a firecracker factory near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured," the President said in a post on X.

Relief measures

The state government pledged relief for affected families, subject to approval from the Election Commission due to ongoing Model Code of Conduct regulations.

The nation mourns the loss of lives in this tragic incident and hopes for a swift recovery for the injured.
