In a tragic turn of events, five medical students, who went to Kanniyakumari to attend a wedding, drowned in the sea off the city coast in Tamil Nadu on Monday. The victims, including two women, were in the final weeks of their course. They were out swimming at a private beach that remained shut in Kanniyakumari.
The students had accessed the closed Lemur Beach through a coconut grove, NDTV quoted Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police E Sundaravathanam as saying.
The beach was closed due to the roughness of the sea and the police launched an investigation into the matter, he added.
According to the media reports, the victims were part of a big group from a popular medical college in Tiruchirappalli that came to Kanniyakumari to attend a wedding on Sunday.
The reports suggested that students formed small groups to explore the city and headed toward different parts of the Kanniyakumari.
The deceased were identified as Sarvadarshith from Kanniyakumari, Praveen Sam from Dindigul, Charukavi from Thanjavur, Gayathiri from Neyveli, and Venkatesh from Andhra Pradesh, the media reports added.
Three women students, who were interns were rescued and taken to the Asaripallam Medical College Hospital. They were getting treatment at the hospital. Hospitalised students are identified as Preethi Priyanka from Theni, Neshi from Karur and Saranya from Madurai.
