Bangkok, Oct 1: American player Donald Young rallied past second-seeded Gael Monfils of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) on Saturday to reach his first career ATP final at the Thailand Open.
The ninth-ranked Monfils' first break point put him ahead 5-4 before the Frenchman clinched the first set after a forehand error by Young.
Monfils saved one set point while trailing 5-6 in the second set before allowing the American back into the match when his own forehand sailed wide as Young clinched the second set.
The 55th-ranked Young trailed 4-1 in the deciding set before rallying to draw even at 4-4 and then rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the tiebreak to win after Monfils' eighth double fault.
“Lately in the big matches that I've won, I've been down,” said the 22-year-old Young. “I just tried to fight and not give up. It paid dividends at the end of match.”
Young will face either top-seeded Andy Murray or another Frenchman in Gilles Simon in Sunday's final on the indoor hard-court.
“It's going to be tough either person I play,” Young said. “Hope I go out there and have a good match.” AP
