The world no.1 Jannik Sinner will kick off his Wimbledon 2024 campaign against Germany's Yannick Hanfmann on July 1. The organisers announced much-awaited singles draws on Friday as the players learned their opening opponents for the biggest Grand Slam of the season.
Sinner and the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz are drawn in the same half after the latter's slip to third spot in the ATP rankings. Alcaraz will begin his title defence against qualifier Mark Lajal of Estonia. Alcaraz could play Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals before potentially taking on Sinner in the projected semifinals.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic faces Czech qualifier Vit Koprica in the first round and can potentially clash against Holger Rune in the fourth round. Djokovic, the seven-time Wimbledon champion, remains without a title in 2024. Andy Murray, playing his last Wimbledon, is drawn against Tomas Machac in the first round.
India's best hope Sumit Nagal faces a tough draw as he is set to clash against Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic, ranked 53rd, in his first-round men's singles. Nagal, ranked 72nd, is making his Wimbledon debut and could play the world no.1 Jannik Sinner if he overcomes his first two matches.
In women's singles, the defending champion Marketa Vondrousova will begin her campaign against Spanish youngster Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and can potentially face the world no.1 Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals. The Polish star has been drawn against the former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the first round.
Swiatek also could play the world no.13 Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round against whom she remains without a win in the past four meetings. The world no.2 and two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka will take on Emina Bektas in the first round.
