The penultimate grand slam of the year, Wimbledon, got underway on July 1 (Monday). Sumit Nagal was the only Indian player to feature in men's singles event and his challenge unfortunately ended in the first round itself as he lost to his Serbian opponent Miomir Kecmanović 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 in four sets. Nagal was the first Indian player after Prajnesh Guneswaran to qualify for the main draw of the grand slam competition.

Nagal fought hard for around 158 minutes before going down to his opponent in the first round of the singles event. Nevertheless, making it to the main draw was a big thing for him and the country and for the same reason, Nagal bowed out with a massive prize money of 60,000 Pounds (approximately Rs 63 lakh). Wimbledon has officially announced the prize money round-wise as well and accordingly, Nagal has won the said amount.

Notably, the prize money for the winners of men's and women's single event is Rs 28.49 crore each which is a lot more compared to the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. Team India won the mega event after 17 years and took home the prize money of Rs 20.64 crore.

Coming back to Nagal, after bowing out of the singles event in the first round, he will be fighting it out in the men's doubles event with Dusan Lajović. The pair will be facing Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar on July 3 (Wednesday). Apart from Nagal, India's top Tennis player Rohan Bopanna will also be in action in men's doubles event with Matthew Ebden and the pair is second seeded in Wimbledon this year.

N Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri are also taking part in the doubles event with their respective partners and will be featuring in the grand slam competition on July 3 (Wednesday).
