Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza went down to Aravane Rezai of France in the first round of Women's Singles of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
The Indian ace, whose first round match had been rescheduled, was defeated in straight sets of 6-4, 6-2 by the 27th seed Rezai.
However, Sania will not bid good bye completely to the Australian open as she also participates in the women's doubles. In the women's doubles, Mirza and Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual, seeded 10th, meet Indonesia's Yayuk Basuki and Kimiko Date of Japan.
Sania came into the season-opening Grand Slam after playing warm up events in Auckland, New Zealand and Hobart.
Sania was the only Indian competing in the singles main draw of the hard court Slam as Somdev Devvarman, Prakash Amritraj and Yuki Bhambri failed to get into the men's singles main draw.
