Montreal, Aug 7: Radek Stepanek upset 12th-seeded Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 4-7 (4), 6-3 Tuesday at the Rogers Cup.
Alex Bogolomov defeated Michael Llodra 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and Jerzy Janowicz edged Julien Benneteau 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Also, Filip Peliwo advanced when Jarkko Nieminen retired with a hamstring injury. Peliwo was leading 3-6, 7-5, 3-1 when the 32-year-old Nieminen stopped play.
In doubles, Rafael Nadal and Pablo Andujar swatted away two match points to defeat fellow Spaniards David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (2), 6-4, 12-10.
