Toronto, Aug 6: Flavia Pennetta and Yanina Wickmayer advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup on Monday.
Pennetta defeated Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and Wickmayer ousted American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Mattek-Sands replaced Britain's Laura Robson, who pulled out because of a right wrist injury. Known for colorful outfits, Mattek-Sands wore black socks and wrist bands with a streak of green in her blonde hair.
In other matches, Mona Barthel edged Jie Zheng 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (1), and Dominika Cibulkova topped Jana Cepelova 7-5, 6-4. Sorana Cirstea defeated qualifier Olga Savchuk 6-2, 6-3.
The 32nd-ranked Robson was coming off a strong performance at Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round, the first British woman to do so since 1998.
Later, 14th-ranked American Sloane Stephens was scheduled to play Kristina Mladenovic.
