The world no.11 pair of Simone Boleli and Andrea Vavassori stunned the title favourites Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden in the French Open 2024 men's doubles semifinals on Thursday, June 6. With Bopanna's exit, India's challenge at the Roland-Garros ended without any silverware.
Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, ranked no.2, suffered a shock 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 defeat at Couth Simone-Mathieu. After losing the first set in a thrilling contest, Bopanna-Ebden recorded a dominant performance in the second set but the Italian pair of Boleli and Vavassori proved too strong in the third set to cause the major upset.
The veteran Indian and his Australian partner recorded a famous win over Simone Boleli and Andrea Vavassori in the Australian Open 2024 final to kick off the season on a positive note. They also won the Inter Miami Open but their run was halted by the same opponent in the Italian Open round of 16 last month.
Iga Swiatek knocks out Coco Gauff to reach the French Open 2024 final
Meanwhile, the world no.1 Iga Swiatek found no challenge against the American star Coco Gauff in the first semifinal of the women's singles. The Polish youngster recorded an easy 6-2, 6-4 win over the no.3 seed on her way to a potential third successive Roland-Garros title.
"I think most of the things overall in my game worked today, so I'm proud of myself," Swiatek said after her win."The surface makes my game better. My grip allows me to spin more. I can play more defense points because it's a bit slower, but on the other hand, I have also more time to attack sometimes. So I feel like I'm just using it well."
Swiatek proved too strong for her opponent as she continued to establish her sensational dominance on clay. The defending champion will face the world no.2 Jasmine Paolini in the final on Friday. The Italian star defeated the 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the second semifinal by 6-3, 6-1 to reach her maiden Grand Slam final.
