Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the final of the men's singles with an impressive win over Daniil Medvedev in the first semi-final of Wimbledon 2024 on Friday, July 12. The Spanish youngster registered a comeback win of 7-6, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 at All England Club to get closer to defending his title.

The 21-year-old Alcaraz also extended his winning run at Wimbledon to 13 matches while Medvedev suffered two consecutive semi-final defeats in Wimbledon. Alcaraz will become the first player to win two consecutive Wimbledon titles in the 21st century before turning 22 if he wins his next game.

Medvedev was brilliant in the opening set after taking an early 5-2 lead and then struggled to keep his opponent quiet for the rest of the match. Alcaraz dominated the next three sets to take the match with a memorable win. The Spaniard notably defeated Medvedev in the semi-final of the last edition at Wimbledon and replicated the same performance at Centre Court today.

“I’m really happy about my performance today,” said Alcaraz in his on-court interview. “I started really nervously. He was dominating the match, playing great tennis with his serve and his return game.

“It was difficult for me but I tried to push out the nerves at the beginning of the second set. It was really helpful to be up 3-1 and after that, I could play my own game and enjoy the match a little bit more. I tried to hit great shots, I moved well, so in general, I think I played a pretty good match.”

Alcaraz will be taking on the second semi-final winner between Lorenzo Musetti and the 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz famously defeated Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final to claim his Grand Slam title while the Serbian legend is chasing a record-breaking eighth title at the  All England Open.
