Sydney: Football Federation Australia has charged the Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers with bringing the game into disrepute and threatened the A-League clubs with loss of competition points.

Supporters of both teams clashed at a Melbourne hotel ahead of their match on Saturday, and police arrested several people. Flares were also set off during the match at AAMI Stadium which finished 1-1.

FFA said in a statement on Friday it has given each club until next Tuesday to show why they should not face sanctions, including the possible loss of three competition points each.

FFA chief executive David Gallop said the threatened loss of points "is a harsh penalty, but it's in equal measure to the enormous damage caused by the type of anti-social behavior."
