Asuncion, Paraguay , Mar 29 : Star-studded Flamengo is on the brink of a group-stage elimination from the Copa Libertadores after the Brazilian club suffered a 3-2 loss at Paraguay's Olimpia on Wednesday.
The result moves Olimpia ahead of Flamengo into second place in Group 2, leaving the Rio de Janeiro club, with internationals such as Ronaldinho and Vagner Love, outside the qualifying positions with two rounds of matches to go.
In other matches Wednesday, Uruguay's Defensor Sporting won 1-0 against Mexico's Guadalajara in Group 7 and Universidad Catolica defeated Union Espanola 2-1 in an all-Chilean Group 3 match.
In Asuncion, Sergio Orteman volleyed home in the seventh minute from a freekick swung into the area from close to the corner flag.
Vagner Love latched onto a precision pass from Ronaldinho to equalize for Flamengo in the 49th, before a goal from Pablo Zeballos and a driven shot from 20 yards (meters) by Eduardo Aranda put the Paraguayan side two goals up.
Argentine Dario Botinelli got one back in the 78th with a long range drive for Flamengo, but Olimpia held on.
Argentine club Lanus stayed in first on seven points in Group 2, with Olimpia also on seven. Flamengo has five and Ecuador*s Emelec has three.
In Montevideo, Uruguay in Group 7, Defensor's Nicolas Olivera finished from close range from a long throw into the box in the 71st minute.
Possession was roughly even until the 40th minute, when Guadalajara's Julio Nava was shown his second yellow card for seeming to elbow Brahian Aleman in the face, although TV replays showed there was no contact.
Defensor dominated after the sending off, with Chivas having endured a long 15-hour journey from Mexico to Uruguay.
Defensor moved into second place in Group 7 on six points, with Chivas last on four points, behind Ecuador*s Deportivo on goal difference. Argentine side Velez Sarsfield is top of the group on nine points, with all three teams having played four games.
In Chile, a diving header from Roberto Ovelar opened the scoring for Universidad Catolica in the eighth in the Group 3 game.
Gonzalo Villagra equalized in the 86th for Union Espanola, after Matias Campos had been sent off for Universidad Catolica in the 79th. Two minutes after the equalizer, Daud Gazale got the winner for 10-man Universidad Catolica.
Union Espanola remains top of the group on seven points, Bolivia's Bolivar in also on seven, Universidad Catolica has six and Colombia's Junior has one point.
