Guwahati: Prominent sports organiser and former footballer Nripendra Narayan Singha died at his residence in Jorhat today following old age ailments.
He was 87 and a bachelor, family members said.
Singha was also an accredited FIFA referee and a prominent sports organiser of the state.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi condoled Singha's death, saying: "In his passing away Assam has lost an eminent sportsperson and organiser who made outstanding contribution to the development of sports."
"The outstanding contribution by Singha for the development of games and sports, particularly football, will be remembered for all times to come. The void created by his death will be hard to fill," he said.
His death was also mourned by different sports organisations of the state.
He was cremated with special honours by the state government in the presence of senior civil and police officials.
