London, Jan 8: English league leaders Manchester United are considering a bid for Chelsea's prolific midfielder Frank Lampard following the London club's decision to not renew the English international's contract.
Lampard's agent had earlier made it clear that the midfielder will leave the club at the end of the season on a free transfer.
With veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs still playing for the Manchester club, manager Alex Ferguson has identified the England international as a potential target to bolster his midfield options, reports Daily Telegraph.
Chelsea signed the 34-year-old from West Ham United in a 11 million pounds deal.
In 2009 Ferguson spoke highly of Lampard.
“He is an exceptional player and a huge asset to his team.”
Chelsea supporters have vociferously supported one of their highest goalscorers and have egged the club owner Roman Abhramovich to extend his contract.
Lampard is just nine goals away from equalling Bobby Tambling as the club's all-time leading goalscorer.
