Montreal, Jul 25: Lyon beat the Montreal Impact 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in its last friendly before the French Cup champion meets Ligue 1 champ Montpellier in the Trophee des Champions this weekend.
The traditional French season opener will be at Red Bull Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, on Saturday, the fourth year in a row its overseas.
Aly Cissokho, Bakari Kone and Gueida Fofana scored Lyon's first three penalty kicks. Sinisa Ubiparovic and Calum Mallace scored for Montreal after its first two opportunities were missed.
Jimmy Brian put Lyon's fourth attempt wide before Bafetimbi Gomis sealed the win before a record crowd at Stade Saputo of 19,225.
In regulation time, Jeremy Pied put Lyon up 1-0 in the 28th minute, and Andrew Wenger leveled 11 minutes later for Montreal. Alessandro Nesta, a member of Italy's 2006 World Cup champion side, made his Montreal debut.
"I think it was a very good game, a good entertainment for the spectators," Lyon coach Remi Garde said. "It was a bit different from my point of view. I would have liked that my team conceded less chances, especially in the first half."
