Berlin,Oct 5 : The German football league (DFL) has turned down a request from Hamburger SV to let Rodolfo Cardoso continue as the club's temporary coach without having the necessary license.
The DFL said Tuesday "there are no extenuating circumstances which warrant an extension to Cardoso's 15-day permit." Cardoso took charge while Hamburg searches for a permanent replacement for Michael Oenning, who was sacked last month.
According to league association statutes, coaches must possess, or be in the process of obtaining, a coaching license in order to fill a vacant coaching position.
Argentine Cardoso did not have written German of a standard required to complete the DFL's course. The 42-year-old coach has applied to take the course again next year.Hamburg -- which is bottom of the Bundesliga -- has a week to appeal the decision.
Cardoso led Hamburg to its first win of the season against Stuttgart and was unlucky to see the side lose 2-1 to Schalke last weekend. His work permit expires on Oct. 8.
"We're very happy with Cardoso's work," said Hamburg sporting director Frank Arnesen.Arnesen -- who has the required coaching license -- may be forced to sit on the bench for Hamburg's next game, at Freiburg on Oct. 16, if a permanent solution cannot be found in the meantime.AP
