Burundi: FIFA executive committee member Lydia Nsekera has been ousted as president of the football federation in her home country Burundi.

The Burundi federation on Sunday announced Nsekera's 31-25 defeat by Reverien Ndikuriyo, a parliamentary senator, hours after the poll was held.

"A new president was elected in a fair and transparent process," FIFA said in a statement on Monday. Observers from football's world governing body and the African confederation attended the election meeting in Bujumbura.

Nsekera will continue to serve her FIFA term through May 2017 despite losing her national power base.

She had led the Burundi federation since 2004 as one of the few women presidents in the history of world football.

In 2012, she was co-opted by FIFA as the first woman to join its ruling board.

In May, she was elected by FIFA member countries at their congress to serve a four-year executive committee term.

Nsekera has also been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2009.
