Sunderland, England: England defender Leighton Baines converted a penalty in the 76th minute to give Everton a 1-1 draw at Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday.

Sebastian Larsson put the hosts ahead with a superb free kick at the Stadium of Light in the 67th.

Baines scuffed his spot kick under Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, following Connor Wickham's challenge on Seamus Coleman.

Sunderland players and home fans among a crowd of 43,476 were incensed at referee Lee Mason's decision to award a penalty, although replays suggested they had little cause to be.

Everton's Gareth Barry left the field on a stretcher in the first half and was taken to the hospital after being caught by Jordi Gomez.

Everton later tweeted an update from manager Roberto Martinez who said: "Happy to confirm that it's not the broken leg we were worried about. There is damage to the ankle we must assess."

After 11 games, midtable Everton has 14 points, two more than Sunderland.
