Berlin, Aug 4: Borussia Dortmund defeated fourth-division Wilhelmshaven 3-0 in the first round of the German Cup on Saturday, while Bayer Leverkusen beat fifth-tier Lippstadt 6-1 to progress.

Dortmund, the 2012 winner, struggled to break down the home side's resolute defense until Kevin Grosskreutz opened the scoring in the 71st minute. Marvin Ducksch secured the result in the 83rd, before Robert Lewandowski added some gloss to the score in the last minute.

"We didn't put on an outstanding football game, but if the Wilhelmshaven goalkeeper hadn't had a day of cream and sugar, we would have decided it earlier and more convincingly," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.

Both Sidney Sam and Stefan Kiessling scored twice in Leverkusen's win, with Lars Bender and halftime substitute Heung-min Son getting the other goals.

Freiburg needed extra-time goals from halftime substitute Hendrick Zuck to overcome fourth-tier side Neustrelitz 2-0.

Another halftime substitute, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, scored twice to rescue a 2-1 win for Mainz at fourth-tier Fortuna Cologne.

Hoffenheim routed fifth-tier SG Aumund-Vegesack 9-0, and second-division Kaiserslautern won 7-0 at sixth-tier Neckarsulmer SU.

Second-division sides Ingolstadt and Energie Cottbus defeated fifth-tier Sportfreunde Baumberg 4-1 and fourth-tier Magdeburg 1-0, respectively.

Another second-division side, Bochum, won 3-1 at fifth-tier Bahlinger SC, and then second-division Aalen won 2-0 at Rosenheim.

Later Saturday, Wolfsburg defeated Karlsruher SC 3-1 with goals in either half from Ivan Perisic and Diego. Selcuk Alibaz pulled one back in the last minute for the second-division side, but Marcel Schaefer secured the win in injury time.

Also, second-division Cologne won 2-0 at fourth-tier Eintracht Trier thanks to a penalty from Marcel Risse and a goal from Maximilian Thiel three minutes from time.

Bayern Munich begins its Cup defense at fourth-tier BSV Rehden on Monday.
