Sao Paulo, Apr 18: Workers building a World Cup stadium in northeastern Brazil ended a weeklong strike after getting a pay raise.

Workers at the Fonte Nova stadium in the city of Salvador said Wednesday they returned to work after accepting a 10.5 percent raise and improved benefits.

They had stopped construction last Thursday as part of a statewide strike by construction workers in Bahia.

Only the Fonte Nova workers returned to their jobs, and the union representing them said the decision was made to help the city keep alive its chances of hosting games in next year's Confederations Cup.

FIFA will decide in June if Salvador and Recife will join four other cities as hosts.

On Monday, workers building the World Cup stadium in Fortaleza ended a two-week strike after also getting a raise.
