Santiago (Chile), May 10: Argentina's Boca Juniors and Brazilian sides Vasco da Gama and Corinthians reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.
Boca Juniors won 3-2 at Chile's Union Espanola, advancing on a 5-3 aggregate over two legs.
Vasco da Gama defeated Lanus of Argentina on penalties. Lanus won the second-leg match 2-1 for a 3-3 aggregate to force the shootout.
Corinthians progressed with a 3-0 home victory against Emelec of Ecuador. The aggregate was also 3-0.
Velez of Argentina and Paraguay's Libertad reached the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Boca entered the game with a goal advantage after a 2-1 win in its home leg, and built on that as Juan Insaurralde scored in the 26th minute and Pablo Mouche made it 2-0 in the 50th.
Jean Pineda got one back for Union in the 62nd to make it 4-2 on aggregate but Juan Roman Riquelme scored in the 68th to re-establish the three-goal buffer, and Union's reply through Oscar Jaime's goal in the 71st was too little too late.
In was a perfect night for Riquelme, the former Barcelona and Villarreal playmaker.
On the opening goal, Riquelme took a free kick from the right side and kept the shot on the ground for Insaurralde to slide in and chip it behind keeper Eduardo Lobos.
Mouche scored off a pass from Riquelme after a Chilean defender failed to clear the ball in the area. Riquelme then added his own goal, scoring from a counterattack as the Chileans were pressing forward.
Boca will face either Fluminense or Internacional in the quarterfinals. Fluminense is the best placed of the two Brazilian clubs after securing a 0-0 draw in the away leg.
Vasco led 2-1 from the first leg and extended that advantage Wednesday as Nilton scored in the 19th minute on a 20-meter drive.
Mario Pavone replied for Lanus in the 61st and the tie was level on aggregate when Teofilo Gutierrez drove in a rebound from a save in the 78th.
Pavone almost scored in the 89th — a goal that would have put Lanus through — but was foiled when Vasco keeper Fernando Prass deflected the header over the crossbar.
Prass came up with another key save on Pavone in stoppage time.
In the shootout, both teams had five shots and the only miss was by Lanus' Silvio Romero.
Vasco will face Corinthians in the quarterfinals. The Sao Paulo club was in the box seat after a scoreless draw at Emelec in the opening leg and from the moment Fabio Santos scored in the eighth minute, Corinthians were in charge.
Paulinho made it 2-0 with a header in the 65th and Alex capped the scoring in the 86th.
