Barcelona, Spain: Atletico Madrid beat visitors Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 on Sunday, hours after a violent clash between the Spanish clubs' fans left one man hospitalized in critical condition, 11 more injured and two arrested.

The Spanish capital's emergency services and police said that a 43-year-old Deportivo fan was resuscitated after being retrieved from the nearby Manzanares River following the fight that erupted at 0800 GMT near Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium.

"We hope this doesn't happen again," said Deportivo defender Laure Sanabria. "It's a sad day."

Atletico said in a statement that it condemned the violence.

Atletico defender Diego Godin said "all the fans of Deportivo and Atletico shouldn't pay the price for these few who don't represent our sport."

The Spanish league game started without delay at 1100 GMT and the public announcer asked Deportivo's traveling fans to remain seated after the final whistle.

Saul Niguez headed Atletico in front in the 43rd minute, turning in a free kick flicked on by striker Mario Mandzukic, who hit the post earlier.

Midfielder Arda Turan sealed the points in the 55th after a long-distance strike.

Atletico moved into provisional second place, four points behind leader Real Madrid. Barcelona can move back ahead of Atletico with a win at Valencia later.

Deportivo was left in the relegation zone.
