Algeria: On June 16 in World Cup history: Algeria shocks West Germany in Gijon, Spain, in 1982.
Algeria's 2-1 victory over one of the tournament favorites was only Africa's second ever in World Cup finals history. A minute after West Germany drew level through captain Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lakhdar Belloumi stroked home the winner in the 68th minute. Belloumi said Algeria's victory provided a "blueprint" for other smaller nations to follow in future World Cups. Despite its win, Algeria failed to make it out of the group after a controversial match later between West Germany and Austria.
