Know the "bad boys" of the year 2014

New Delhi: The year 2014 which is just few days away, has witnessed many big sporting events. But as always, no big sporting event is ever completed without a controversy.There had been number of incidents which involved world class players in scuffles. Some players did it deliberately while some called it as something happened at heat of the moment.It certainly does not make the fans happy when they see their favorite players involved in a physical altercation. At that point of time they surely cannot be called as heroes of the game.India TV brings to you the list of such sports personalities who were nothing but actually the Bad Boys of the year 2014: 1) Luis Suarez (Football)The list starts with one of the famous controversy of the year. Luis Suarez, the Uruguayan footballer who is well known for his on-field controversies was in news again during FIFA World Cup 2014.In the final group match against Italy, Suarez appeared to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. This is not the first time he had bitten someone on-field. There had been two instances more in the past.He continued to make excuses that it was not done by deliberately but after some time asked for apology.He was banned for nine matches and from all football activities for four months but was later forgiven by Chiellini.Suarez could not participate in the rest of the World Cup and also missed first nine games of the Premier League season. 2) James Anderson & Ravindra Jadeja (cricket)The two cricketers were involved in a verbal spat during the first England vs India test in July at Nottingham.According to reports, Anderson was said to have pushed Jadeja with his hands but no evidence were there to prove it. While Jadeja was accused Anderson of abusing and threatening Anderson.The spat was not only a bad era of cricket, but it certainly might have spoiled Indo-England cricket relations to some extent.Anderson and Jadeja both were booed by the crowd of their opponent's nation.Hoever when ICC Chief Dave Richardson held the matter into his hands, the players were set free due to lack of evidences from both the sides. 3) Ishant Sharma (cricket)Ishant Sharma was found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Test, which the home side won by four wickets at Brisbane.He had been fined 15 percent of his match fee for violating Level 1 Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International match".The incident happened in the first innings when Ishant was seen on television screens using inappropriate words after dismissing Australia captain Steven Smith.The Indian pacer admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee.He also showed his anger when he was not satisfied with the food provided at Lunch on Day 3 at Gabba. 4) Lee Chong (Badminton)With the New Year bell approaching, Malaysia's ace badminton player Lee Chong Wei may barely have the mood to celebrate as the drug-hit shuttler is keen to clear his name.The world top ranked has been temporarily suspended from competition by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) "due to an apparent anti-doping regulation violation", after his urine sample was tested positive to the banned anti-inflammatory drug during the World Championships in late August.Malaysian loses his top ranking with Chinese world champion Chen Long.Although Lee is confident that his name will be cleared, he also expressed his concern that he would never realize his dreams to win world and Olympic title if he was suspended for a long time. 5) Shakib-Al-Hasan (cricket)It was not a good year for the Bangladeshi all-rounder. In February, he was banned for three matches by the BCB for "making an inappropriate gesture on live television" during the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Mirpur. He was also fined BDT 300,000 ($3800). He was summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee and missed the first to Asia Cup games as well.Five months later in July 2014, he was yet again suspended for serious misbehavior with Bangladesh's new coach Chandika Hathurusingha and for his altercation with a spectator during the first ODI against India in Mirpur.BCB President Nazmul Hassan accused of having a severe attitude problem, which is unprecedented in the history of Bangladesh cricket.He was severely punished with a six month ban and disallowing him to play in overseas competitions until end of 2015.On September 15, the BCB partially lifted the ban and allowed Shakib to play for Bangladesh in the Asian Games and home Test and limited-overs series against Zimbabwe.He was also not allowed to play for his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders in CLT20 but on December 4, BCB finally lifted the ban off and allowed him to play for Melbourne Renegades in Australia's Big Bash League. 6) Nico Rosberg (Formula One)Mercedes' driver Nico Rosberg deliberately crashed his teammate's Lewis Hamilton's car during Belgian Grand Prix, as claimed by Hamilton himself.His race was effectively ended when he suffered a puncture on lap two after Rosberg collided with him.They had a meeting together in which Rosberg admitted that he did that on purpose. He could have avoided that but he didn't want to and did it to prove a point.Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff also said the incident was "absolutely unacceptable" and blamed Rosberg for causing it. 7) Jesse Ryder (cricket)In the month of February during India's tour to New Zealand, the Kiwi opener was indulged in a fight with his teammate Doug Bracewell. On the eve of first test i.e. 5th February Jesse Ryder and the bowling all-rounder Doug Bracewell went for a late night drinking session at Auckland Bar. The two players then got injured after a physical altercation with each other.Both the players though admitted to being at the incident, but were dropped from the selection for the second test against India.Last year in March after getting drunken late night in a bar, he was attacked by a group of youths and suffered a fractured skull and a collapsed lung. He went into koma but gained his consciousness soon. 8) Kieron Pollard and Mitchell Starc (cricket)The scuffle between Kieron Pollard and Mitchell Starc occurred during IPL 7 when Mumbai Indians were taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 6. It was one of the worst incident ever happened in the cricket history when angry Pollard attempted to throw his bat on Starc.Starc bowled a bouncer at Mumbai's batsman Pollard, who was beaten as he attempted a hook. Starc went up to the batsman and spoke a few words and Pollard's reaction was to wave him off. As Starc ran in to bowl the next ball, Pollard pulled out of the delivery by backing away outside leg stump just as the bowler was approaching his jump.Starc did not abort the delivery, though; instead he followed the batsman and bowled the ball in anger close to Pollard's legs. Pollard responded by swinging his bat hard - appearing to threaten to throw it at the bowler - and it slipped out of his hand and fell on the leg side. Both players were visibly angry and continued to exchange words.Pollard lost 75% of his match fee while Starc was penalised 50% by match referee Andy Pycroft.9) Kohli-Dhawan-Warner (cricket)During the Adelaide test in the ongoing Australia-India test series Aussie opener David Warner and Indian skipper Virat Kohli with Shikhar Dhawan were involved in not just one but two incidents in the same day and same innings.The first incident took place in the second session of the fourth day when India pacer Varun Aaron dismissed Warner off a no-ball. Kohli and Aaron had given the batsman a send-off and once he was called back by the umpires, Warner shouted "come on, come on" towards the bowler.Warner shouted again as he left alone the next delivery, angering the Indian players a little more. Dhawan and Warner then exchanged a few words, stopping the game in the process. Warner later admitted he may have responded a bit too strongly but stated that this was a part of the game.Kohli was fined for his argument with Steven Smith, following an lbw appeal off Rohit Sharma's bowling. Warner was fined 15% of his match fee while Kohli and Dhawan were docked 30% of theirs following squabbles. Kohli was clearly heared asking Smith to stay in his limits.Dhawan and Kohli reportedly were also involved in an argument inside the Indian dressing room regarding Dhawan's wrist injury during practice due to which Kohli has to open the innings on Day 4. Kohli was out cheaply and so was the whole batting line up. According to the reports, Kohli lashed out at Dhawan for his cheap dismissal and when the argument heated up, team manager Ravi Shastri had to intervene and stop both the players. 10) Yusuf Pathan (cricket) India discard Yusuf Pathan allegedly slapped a young fan for making "indecent comments" during a Ranji Trophy Cricket match between Baroda and Jammu and Kashmir.According to Secretary of Baroda Cricket Association (BCA), Snehal Parikh, the spectator had been passing "indecent comments" against Pathan and his teammates during the match."This youngster had been shouting and passing indecent comments against Pathan and other players, such as Ambati Rayudu, when they were batting. Pathan was in no mood to tolerate such behaviour. Thus, after he got out, he called that youngster inside the dressing room and allegedly slapped him twice," said Parikh.Yusuf's younger brother Irfan Pathan rushed to the dressing room to bring the situation under control. However the matter was resolved after a family member of the youth came and apologised on his behalf.The Board of Control for Cricket in India is upset by the turn of events and has asked a report about the incident from Baroda Cricket Association and may face action according to the Indian cricket board's Level 2 or 3 offence.
