New Delhi: Indian boxers on Wednesday, the Fifth Day of 17th Asian Games 2014 will be starting their campaign with an aim to better the record of the year 2010 when they managed an impressive tally of nine medals, including two gold.
Shiva Thapa would kick start India's bid when he takes on Parada Helo Leonel of the small country Timor Leste in the men's 56kg weight class while Senior boxer Akhil Kumar, on a comeback trail, then takes on Nepal's L Purna Bahadur in the 60kg class.
Today, Star Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra brought the curtains down on his competitive career with two bronze medals while Saurav Ghosal had to be content with a historic squash silver as India maintained 13th position after the fourth day of competitions.
Wushu players contributed to India's medal kitty by bringing two bronze before ending their campaign. Sanathoi lost to Zhang Luan of China in women's Sanda 52kg category semifinals, while Grewal was defeated by Jean Claude Saclag of Philippines in men's Sanda 60kg semifinals.
The Indian men's hockey team continued their winning run as they thrashed minnows Oman 7-0 but were far from impressive in their performance.
With the addition of five more medals, India held on to their 13th position on the medals table with a tally of one gold, one silver and nine bronze. Powerhouse China continued to top the table with 82 (40-22-20), followed by hosts South Korea 59 (19-19-21) and Japan 60 (16-22-22).
