Chennai: Chess wizard Viswanathan Anand's mother Sushila Viswanathan has passed away in her sleep here. She was 79.
Her last rites will be performed tomorrow at 10 am at Besant Nagar crematorium here.
She leaves behind her husband K Viswanathan, daughter and two sons of whom Anand is the youngest.
P.R.Venkatarama Raja, President All India Chess Federation, expressed his condolences on the demise of Sushila Viswanathan, lauding her dedicated efforts in making Anand a Champion chess player.
Sushila taught Anand the basic moves of the game and accompanied him to various events.
Anand also added “My mother Susheela was my guru because she was the one who taught me how to play chess. Interestingly, she was the one who accompanied me on all my national and international tourneys till I turned 17. And there are so many things, including swimming, that she learnt just to give me company”
