India's top boxer Amit Panghal secured the Paris Olympics 2024 qualification after a hard-fought win in the quarterfinals of the second world qualification tournament in Bangkok on Sunday, June 2. Amit became the only second male Indian boxer after Nishant Dev to secure the quota for the Summer Olympic Games.
Panghal, 28, registered a 5-0 win in the men's 51kg quarterfinal bout against China's Chuang Liu to become the fifth Indian boxer to earn the Paris ticket. Amit and Jaismine joined Nishant Dev (71kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) in the list of Indian boxers to book the Paris Games quota.
The Haryana boxer was trailing 1-4 at the beginning of the second round against Chuang but made a stunning comeback with aggressive boxing. Amit, the 2018 Asian Games champion, registered a had-fought win to complete his successful comeback to the national team.
Meanwhile, Jaismine Lamboria, 22, also clinched the Paris Qualification in the women's 57kg category on Sunday. Haryana-born young boxer defeated a Malian pugilist Marine Camara in the quarterfinal of the World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers to become the sixth Indian athlete to earn the Paris quota in boxing.
Notably, Parveen Hooda had earlier secured a Paris quota in the women's 57kg category but was forced to surrender after being suspended for whereabouts failures. Lamboria had participated in the first qualifiers in the 60kg category but could not secure the quota.
Meanwhile, Sachin Siwach missed out on the Paris ticket after his 0-5 loss in the quarterfinal bout on Sunday. With Sachin's defeat, India's campaign in the second qualifiers finished. India managed to win just three of possible ten quotas in their final attempt in Bangkok.
