Ace table tennis player and Olympian Soumyajit Ghosh has been accused for rape by an 18-year-old girl in West Bengal. Ghosh, who has represented India in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, has been accused for impregnating the girl and forced to her undergo an abortion. The girl (anonymous) has filed an FIR in the Barasat Women Police Station on Wednesday. However, the family of the Olympian has denied the charges that have been pressed against him and state that it is all a conspiracy.
One of Gosh's relatives has denied all the allegations on the athlete, saying all this was done to defame Gosh.
"This is a conspiracy to distract Gosh ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games and extract money from him through blackmailing," the relative said.
According to Bengali daily Ebela, the complaint stated that Ghosh vowed to tie the knot but later denied it. The 24-year-old Table Tennis player who is an Arjuna awardee is said to have made false promises. The complaint has also stated that he raped her several times over the past three years.
As per reports, the Olympian and the girl interacted on social media in 2014 and got into a relationship. The girl has further stated that they met at Ghosh's flat in Kolkata and Siliguri, the table tennis star's hometown.
The reports further suggested that the girl underwent an abortion as the ace TT player promised to get married once she turned 18. The girl's father has also reacted to the matter and said that Ghosh has been avoiding his daughter which prompted them to reach out to the police.
Barasat additional SP Abhijit Banerjee said, “We have received a complaint against table tennis player Soumyajit Ghosh and have started an investigation. The details can’t be revealed.”
