Rio Olympics: Gold medalists from Haryana to get Rs 6 crore cash prize

What may further boost the morale of Rio Olympics bound sportspersons from Haryana, chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced big cash prizes for medal winners from the state.

The policy entails a cash reward of Rs 6 crore will be for winning the gold medal, Rs 4 crore for silver medal and Rs 2.5 crore for bronze medal. Also, each participant gets Rs 15 lakh in cash as reward money.

Notedly, 20 athletes are representing India from Haryana, a state with a consistent record of bagging medals for the country.

Last month, the state government decided to review its Sports Gradation Policy to ensure that only “outstanding” sportspersons get jobs in its departments.

The Haryana government will organise a special function to honour all the 22 sportspersons from the state who have qualified to participate in Rio Olympics. Each of them will be handed cash award of Rs 15 lakh, said Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Anil Vij.

He said that players who bring laurels to the country and the state by winning medals in the Olympics would be honoured with cash awards as per the new sports policy of the state government.
