Famous writer and socialite Shobhaa De invited controversy on Monday when she took a dig at the Indian athletes participating at the Rio Olympics on Twitter.
While the Indian contingent has so far failed to secure a medal in the ongoing sporting extravaganza, Shobhaa’s tweet has added to the unhappiness of sports lovers of the country.
“Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity,” she tweeted.
As expected, the famous columnist faced a huge uproar over her comment.
India’s ace shooter Abhinav Bindra, missed out the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics by a whisker, thereby finishing fourth in the 10m air rifle event, got upset with De’s remark and replied, “that's a tad unfair. You should be proud of your athletes perusing human excellence against the whole world.”
Commenting on Bindra’s response, actress Gul Panag tweeted, “And do so despite of and in spite of there being no infra & institutional support, and no sporting culture.”
This is how former hockey captain Viren Rasquinha hit back on Shobhaa.
Twitteratis were unsparing their remarks as they tore into the socialite for her disgraceful comment on the Indian athletes competing in the Rio Olympics.
