Wrestler Sakshi Malik who made India proud by winning a bronze medal in Rio Olympics is about to get hitched soon. The 23-year old Haryanavi wrestler made this announcement yesterday.
Sakshi hasn’t named her to-be huband yet but the 23-year old wrestler said, “He is very supportive and considers my dream as his own. After marriage, I will get a good friend in him, who would also help me in my preparation. I believe marriage would have no negative bearings on my wrestling career.”
In an effort to show that there is no connection between marriage and wrestling, the Rohtak born wrestler said, “I am happy to change the perception of those people who thought that women cannot wrestle and used to bully me at every given opportunity.”
Sakshi scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in the sport of wrestling. She had defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova to clinch the bronze medal.
Sakshi is aiming to win another medal for India in the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also announced that Sakshi will be the brand ambassador of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign in the state.
‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ programme aims to empower the girl child and stop female foeticide. Haryana particularly is a state that has a skewed gender ratio.
Sakshi hails from the Mokhra Khas village in the state’s Rohtak district.
A diminutive girl from Mokhra village near Rohtak in Haryana, Sakshi is the only women wrestler from the village which has produced several achievers in the field.
Sakshi made history by winning first medal for India by winning bronze in the women's 55kg freestyle event at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.
