Born on November 24 in 1982, Mary Kom turned heads with her exceptional Boxing during her illustrious career. She historically won the bronze medal at the London Olympics in the 51 kg flyweight category. However, this was not her only achievement as Kom was already a star boxer even before winning the Olympic medal.
Mary Kom won the gold medal a total of 14 times including in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Stunningly, six of her gold medals came in the World Championships and also dominated the Asian Championships during her career.
She missed out on qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics but made it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which was also her last appearance at the Summer Games. The last medal of her career came in Asian Championships 2021 in Dubai where she won silver in the flyweight 51 kg category.
Mary Kom’s effort has been recognised multiple times as she has been honoured with Padma Shri (2006), Padma Bhushan (2013) and Padma Vibhushan (2020) awards so far.
