Lucknow: Defending champions Delhi Waveriders were held 2-2 by Uttar Pradesh Wizards in their opening match of the third Hero Hockey India League (HIL) at the Dhayan Chand Sports College ground here Friday.
Dutch star striker Jeroen Hertzberger converted the penalty stroke in the 17th minute to make it 1-0 for the Wizards. But Delhi made a quick comeback through New Zealander Steven Edwards' equaliser in the same quarter after seven minutes.
The third quarter of the match went goalless and both teams were locked at 1-1.
Talwinder Singh gave Delhi the lead in the 49th minute after the visitors countered from Wizards' penalty corner.
The hosts UP held the nerves in the dying minutes of the match as Indian international Ramandeep Singh scored the equaliser and helped his team share the points with the Delhi outfit.
