The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday announced a financial assistance of five crore rupees for the national hockey players and also offered to sponsor the team for the next two years.
Annoyed by the official apathy, the hockey players had pulled out of the World Cup preparatory camp before reaching an agreement with the Hockey India today.
"The state government is also ready to sponsor the hockey team for the next two years with an objective of supporting the team and its players," Mayawati said in a statement in Lucknow after making the announcement about the financial assistance.
She said that her government was committed to promote sports and sportsmen.
"I hope that the step taken by the state would help Indian team to perform well in the world cup and do the country proud," she said while extending her best wishes to the team for their campaign in the World Cup, starting next month in New Delhi. PTI
