New Delhi: Delhi Waveriders defeated Punjab Warriors 3-1 in the final today to win the Hockey India League.
The match was decided in a penalty shootout, after both the teams were locked in a 3-3 draw during regulation time.
The winners took Rs 2.5 crore as prize money. Delhi Waveriders had lost the final last year.
In Ranchi today, Ranchi Rhinos beat Uttar Pradesh Wizards 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out to finish third.
Both teams were tied 1-1 after 70 minutes. Drag-flick specialist V.R. Raghunath struck for Wizards in the 15th minute before Manpreet Singh foxed three defenders to level the match in the 30th minute.
Ashley Jackson, captain Moritz Furste and Bosco del Perez scored for Rhinos in the shoot-out while Nitin Thimmaiah and Edward Ockenden struck for Wizards but in vain.
Rhinos pocketed Rs.75 lakh as prize money.
