Horrible refereeing cost India an opportunity to secure a berth into the third round of the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Tuesday as Qatar scored a contentious goal in the 73rd minute of the game to emerge victorious.

Yousef Aymen's equaliser in the 73rd minute of the match was declared as fair even after the ball had gone out of play and the goal swung the pendulum in Qatar's favour.

Qatar scored their second goal of the match in the 85th minute and it turned out to be the decisive one in the context of the match.

What hurt the most was the fact that India were leading the game till the controversial call was made and were standing on the threshold of history. The day's other match between Kuwait and Afghanistan had ended in Kuwait's favour and therefore India needed to beat Qatar to advance to the next round of the qualifiers.

The incident left the Indian football fans outraged and they took to the social media platform 'X' to vent out their frustration on the poor decision. Notably, this was India's first game after the retirement of the legendary Sunil Chhetri.
