England finalised their squad for the Euro 2024 by omitting nine players from their provisional 33-member squad on Friday, June 7. Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur's star midfielder James Maddison were among high profile names to miss the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
Manager Gareth Southgate preferred young guns Kobbie Mainoo, Adam Wharton, Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon in his final 26-member squad for Euro 2024. Jack Grealish, who won the English Premier League title with Manchester City last month, also failed to make the team.
Liverpool's rising youngsters Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah were also left out along with Jarrad Branthwaite and James Trafford. Only 14 of the selected players were part of the World Cup 2022 squad and the majority of the new faces lack experience of playing in a big competition.
"The decision on picking a squad is always a moment in time," Gareth Southgate said in the press conference. "Sometimes you perhaps regenerate the group more than you were expecting a couple of months ago but that has already brought a hunger, a competitiveness and the key now is we have to bond as a group."
The Three Lions registered an easy 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in their first practice match on Tuesday with Cole Palmer, Harry Kane and Trent Alexander-Arnold finding the back of the nets. England will next play Iceland in their second warm-up match before taking on Serbia in their first Euro 2024 game on June 17.
