Barcelona have sacked Xavi Hernandez from the coaching role after a trophy-less season for Barca. Xavi took charge of Barca in November 2021 and led the team to the La Liga title in his maiden full season with the club.
Barcelona confirmed that Xavi will not be with the team for the 2024-25 season. He will be the club's in charge for their final game of the season against Sevilla on Sunday.
"Today Friday, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has informed Xavi Hernández that he will not be continuing as first team coach in the 2024-25 season," Barca said in a statement.
The club held a meeting which was also attended by sporting vice-president Rafa Yuste, the director of sport Anderson Luis de Souza, Deco, Xavi, Òscar Hernández and Sergio Alegre.
Xavi had said earlier in January that he would leave the club after the end of the season but then after some strong performances, he came to an agreement with president Laporta that the former Spanish midfielder would remain with the team for the next season too. However, things went South after Laporta reportedly got angered over Xavi's comments.
Now, German coach Hansi Flick is the most likely candidate to take over the job from Xavi. Barcelona wished the 44-year-old for his future endeavours. "FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world," the club said.
"Xavi Hernandez will be coaching the team for the last time in Sunday's game away to Sevilla. During the course of the next few days, FC Barcelona will be making an announcement regarding the new first team structure," the club added.
Barcelona lost the La Liga title this year too as Real Madrid clinched yet another title. Meanwhile, Barca also lost both of their clashes against Madrid in the Spanish league. They also went down to their El Classico rivals in the Spanish Super Cup final and in the Copa del Rey semifinal last year.
