ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates: Pakistan lost captain Misbah-ul Haq at the stroke of tea on the second day of the second test match Friday, but Younis Khan continued to take heavy toll of the Australian bowling as they reached an imposing total of 517-4.
At Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Misbah became the third Pakistan batsman to make a century, while Younis Khan was still going strong at 205 not out.
It is his Younis' fifth double century. When he reached 181, he also became only the third Pakistani batsman to reach 8,000 runs. His highest score is 313 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009 - the last completed test match on Pakistan soil.
Younis reached 196 with his second six of the innings off Maxwell, whom he lofted over long off, and then pushed the same bowler for a single in his next over to reach his double century. It took him 334 balls and he struck 14 boundaries and two sixes.
Misbah, who came at the fall of Azhar Ali's wicket in the morning session, played positive cricket throughout and slammed his sixth career test century in just 165 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and two sixes. He is now the oldest batsman from Asia to make a century at the age of 40 years and 156 days.
Misbah was dismissed soon after he made his century - caught and bowled by Steven Smith for 101. The fourth wicket partnership was worth 179 runs.
The only real chance Australia had in the second session was when at 431-3, Misbah slashed at Lyon and the ball flew at great speed straight to Warner's face in the slip, but he removed himself from harm's way.
Earlier, only one wicket fell in the extended morning session as Pakistan added 101 runs in 34 overs.
Azhar Ali, who reached his century off the penultimate ball on Thursday evening, could add only eight runs to his overnight score when he was caught brilliantly down the leg side by make-shift wicket-keeper David Warner off Mitchell Starc.
A draw or a win in the test match would give Pakistan a rare series win over Australia. They have beaten them five times before at home, but their last series victory came 20 years ago in 1994.
