Syndey: Rangana Herath has been ruled out of Sri Lanka's World Cup squad hours before Wednesday's quarterfinal against South Africa.
The left-arm spinner injured the index finger on his bowling hand in a Pool A match against England and hasn't properly practiced for two weeks. He bowled briefly in the nets on the eve of Wednesday's match before seeking more treatment.
The International Cricket Council announced in a statement that it had approved 22-year-old Tharindu Kaushal as a replacement for Herath for the knockout stage of the tournament.
Sri Lanka, the 1996 champion and runner-up at the last two World Cups, has been hit by injuries before and during the tournament, losing five players from the initial squad.
