Eoin Morgan's breezy 35-ball 55 went in vain as West Indies beat England by eight wickets via Duckworth Lewis method in a rain-marred Twenty20 World Cup Group D match to enter the Super Eight stage at Guyana.

Put in to bat, England piled up a challenging 191 for five, thanks to Morgan and his 95-run partnership with Luke Write, who also scored 45 off 27 balls.

Chasing 192 to win, West Indies were 30 for no loss in 2.2 overs when heavy downpour started. Captain Chris Gayle (16 not out) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (10 not out) were batting when the play stopped yesterday.

When the play resumed after over an hour, Duckworth Lewis method was applied and the West Indies were given a revised victory target of 30 in six overs, which the hosts achieved with one ball to go.

Winner of England-Ireland match will now join them in the Super Eight stage.

Requiring 30 runs from 3.2 overs after resumption, West Indies lost Gayle (25) and newman Kieron Pollard also departed without scoring anything as Graeme Swann (2/24) scalped both.

Opener Chanderpaul (15 not out) and Andre Fletcher (12 not out), however, ensured that the hosts make it to the Super Eight stage by winning the match.

Earlier, England were off to a pacy start with first three overs of the match yielding 30 runs.

They suffered the first loss when Gayle removed Michael Lumb, who made 28 off 18 balls with the help of four fours, in the fourth over.

Kevin Pietersen then joined Craig Kieswetter and added 30 runs for second wicket partnership before a Nikita Miller delivery found latter's leg in front of the wickets.

Kieswetter had struck a huge six off the second delivery of the over but Miller took his revenge by removing the batsman in the very next ball.

Captain Paul Collingwood (6) was the next man to go as Darren Sammy bowled him in the 10th over and then the pacer struck again by removing Pietersen in last ball of the over.

Pietersen, who made a quick 20-ball 24, had to return to the dugout after his ambitious shot found Ramnaresh Sarwan near the midwicket boundary.

Morgan then got the company of Wright and they helped England to pile up a good total. In the 18th over off Ravi Rampaul the duo took 27 runs with the help of three sixes and a four.

Later Pollard took a diving catch off Bravo's last over to remove Morgan. Tim Bresnan (0) remained unbeaten along with Wright.

For West Indies, Sammy took two wickets for 22 runs while Gayle, Miller and Bravo scalped one each. PTI
