St. George's, Grenada : Opener Kraigg Brathwaite's unbeaten 101 led a spirited West Indies fightback after Joe Root's unbeaten 182 gave England an imposing first innings lead of 165 on the fourth day of the second test Friday.
The West Indies ended the day 202-2, trailing by 37 with three sessions remaining on the final day. The first of the three tests in the series was drawn last week in Antigua .
Brathwaite reached his fourth century in his 19th test, adding 142 for the second wicket with left-hander Darren Bravo.
They defied England 's bowlers on an easy-paced pitch under clear sunny skies for just over three hours after Grenadian Devon Smith was bowled by James Anderson for 1 in the third over of the West Indies innings.
They seemed well entrenched when Stuart Broad found the edge of Bravo's tentative bat for a catch to wicket-keeper Jos Buttler 12.5 overs into the final session with the West Indies still 20 in arrears. Bravo stroked 12 fours in his 69 off 147 balls.
Brathwaite, 69 when his stand with Bravo ended, went scoreless off his next 24 deliveries but he didn't lose patience. He completed his hundred in the day's penultimate over with a cut for two off Anderson . His main scoring shots were 11 fours off 230 balls.
First innings century maker Marlon Samuels remained with Brathwaite to the end when he was 22.
Root resumed at his overnight 118 and passed 2,000 runs in his 24th test before England were all out for 464 in reply to the West Indies 299.
The 24-year-old Yorkshire native added two sixes to the two he hit on the previous day and four fours to his 13. When the innings ended, he had batted for 229 balls.
Run outs accounted for two of his last three partners.
After wicketkeeper Jos Buttler was stumped off legspinner Davendra Bishoo in the fourth over of the day for 13, Chris Jordan was left inches short of his crease on Jason Holder's pinpoint throw from the deep to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.
The innings ended when Anderson was run out for 2, complacently failing to ground his bat.
In between, Bishoo claimed his fourth wicket, Stuart Broad caught for 0 at slip off his glove. It was a marathon effort by Bishoo, playing his first test in three years, sending down 51 overs and conceding 177.
