Nottingham, May 25: A century from Marlon Samuels and the highest ever test score by Darren Sammy dragged West Indies back into the second test with England at Trent Bridge, steering the tourists to 304-6 at stumps on Friday.
Samuels ended day one unbeaten on 107, with 15 fours from 225 balls, while captain Sammy was 88 not out, after an aggressive innings spanning 121 balls, with a six and 13 fours.
James Anderson took 2-58 and Stuart Broad 2-59.
West Indies have never lost a test at Trent Bridge, but that record looked in danger when they slumped to 136-6 after winning the toss and choosing to bat.
The tourists made two changes to the side that lost the first test at Lord's, bringing in Shane Shillingford and Ravi Rampaul for Fidel Edwards and Shannon Gabriel.
England captain Andrew Strauss, who named an unchanged side, admitted he would have batted given the choice, but it looked like a reasonable toss to lose when three wickets fell in the first hour.
In the fourth over Broad produced a delivery that bounced up sharply and Adrian Barath sent it straight to second slip, where Anderson took an excellent one-handed catch to dismiss the opener for a duck.

Darren Bravo fell in the 15th over, caught by Swann at second slip off Anderson for just three and Chanderpaul made a nervous start, sending the first ball he faced off his arm guard to the boundary before bisecting the slip cordon with an edge in Anderson's next over.
Kieran Powell had looked well set, but on 33 he wafted at a Broad delivery and was caught in the slips by Anderson.
Samuels was on 1 when he was adjudged lbw to Bresnan, but he successfully referred the decision and looked increasingly confident in surviving to lunch.
West Indies resumed on 84-4 and made painfully slow progress in the first hour of the afternoon session -- the first 10 overs yielded just seven runs, and included six maidens.

Sammy hit Swann for the first six of the series over extra cover, then smashed Jonathan Trott through mid on to pass his previous highest test score of 61.
After 90 minutes without even the sniff of a wicket England took the new ball as soon as it became available, but although Anderson caused Sammy some problems the anticipated breakthrough never came and Samuels brought up his third test century when he glanced Anderson to third man in the penultimate over.
By the close of play Samuels and Sammy had put on an unbroken stand of 168 for the seventh wicket, a West Indies record at Trent Bridge.
