David Warner - Top 10 test batsmen of the year 2014

5) David Warner (Australia)

The fifth spot belongs to Australia's swashbuckling opener David Warner. In 17 innings this year he scored 1096 runs at an average of 64.47 and the strike rate of 81.48 which is the highest among top 10 and even top 50.

Warner scored his third century in as many Test innings, to make him just the seventh Australian batsmen to achieve this incredible feat. The last two Aussies to do it were Sir Don Bradman, who did against India in 1948, and Adam Gilchrist who achieved it in 2005.

The Australian opener, having scored 135 and 145 against South Africa earlier this year, helped himself to 133 against Pakistan on a pitch where his teammates struggled to adapt to.

Warner has been in sensational form this calendar year, having scored 6 Test centuries. He recently scored two back to back tons against India in the first test at Adelaide in the ongoing 4 test series. He had 145 runs as his highest individual score this year in the first innings of first test in the series followed by 102 in another. He dedicated his feat to his late teammate Phillip Hughes who died last month.

Mahela Jayawardene - Top 10 test batsmen of the year 2014

6) Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)

Another Sri Lankan veteran Mahela Jayawardene might have retired from test cricket this year but he finishes with the 6th spot in the best cricketers list.

He announced his retirement from test cricket after the home series against Pakistan in August 2014 and bid farewell to his career with a 2-0 win. But unfortunately he couldn't performed well in the series and scored just 143 runs in four innings with two half centuries.

In 19 innings of 11 tests, he made 1003 runs with an average and strike rate of 55.72 and 50.81 respectively.

He started the year with a bang, scoring an unbeaten double hundred (203) against Bangladesh in January.

He has 3 centuries and 5 half centuries in his name this year.
