Sydney: Australia stand-in skipper after hitting centuries on his debut as captain in both ODIs and tests won the Allan Border Medal as the overall player of the year and was named test and one-day international player of the year.

He has been named as capatin in the absence of Michael Clarke who has been struggling with his hamstring.

Smith polled a total of 243 votes to win the medal edging past the likes of opener David Warner (175) and pacer Mitchell Johnson (126).

"I've just really enjoyed the last 12 to 18 months," Smith was quoted as saying by the Cricket Australia website.

"And seeing some of those highlights, particularly the South Africa to win over here and beat the number one Test team in the world in their own backyard was amazing," he added.

The votes were casted by fellow players, media representatives and umpires and the cumulative amount was taken into account.

Smith has scored 2,304 runs from 26 Test matches at an average of 52.36.

Fast bowler Sean Abbott, who bowled the bouncer that resulted in the death of batsman Phil Hughes, has been named Australia's young cricketer of the year.

The 22-year-old Abbott, who made his one-day and Twenty20 debuts for Australia in October, received the award, named for Sir Don Bradman, at a ceremony Tuesday. Phil Hughes won the Bradman award in 2009.

Abbott was bowling for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia on Nov. 25 when his short-pitched delivery struck Hughes on the neck. Hughes lost consciousness and died two days later in hospital.
