Durban, Dec 29: Sri Lanka was all out for 279 in its second innings Thursday to lead South Africa by a massive 449 runs early on the fourth day of the second test at Kingsmead.
Dale Steyn picked up 5-73 but there was little celebration from the fast bowler as the Proteas needed a world-record winning total in the final innings to steal the match.
Sri Lanka has the best part of two days to bowl the home team out and level the three-match series in a dramatic turnaround after the tourists lost the first test by an innings.
Sri Lanka added 23 to its overnight score of 256-7, enough to set South Africa a massive victory target of 450.
South Africa has lost its last three tests at Kingsmead and was bowled out for just 168 in the first innings of this match.
