Records tumbled at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers mercilessly butchered the Indian bowlers in the final ODI.
South Africa smashed the highest ever ODI total on Indian soil with a humongous 438/4 in their 50 overs after winning the toss. de Kock, du Plessis and de Villiers all blasted centuries.
The previous record was 418/5 by India against the West Indies in Indore in 2011.
That was the game in which Virender Sehwag went berserk to hammer the then highest individual ODI score of 219.
India ended up winning the match comfortably by 153 runs.
South Africa's 438 was the sixth time a team had crossed 400 in India.
That includes two totals of 400+ in the same game when India beat Sri Lanka by the wafer-thin margin of three runs after piling up 414 in Rajkot in 2009. On that occasion, it was again Sehwag who top scored for India with 146.
South Africa only narrowly fell short of the highest ODI score anywhere which is 443/9 by Sri Lanka against the minnows Netherlands in 2006.
Incredibly it is not South Africa's highest ever ODI score. The visitors fell one run short of the 439/2 they smashed against the West Indies in Johannesburg earlier this year. That game also saw three centurions for South Africa including de Villiers who pillaged the fastest ever ODI ton in just 31 balls.
South Africa's total in Mumbai is the joint third highest ever, equal with the 438/9 they made in the famous Johannesburg game against Australia in 2006.
That is still the highest total ever made by a team batting second.
