Mohali, Mar 16: Team India's explosive batsman Shikhar Dhawan today became the first Indian batsman to score the highest runs in a Test debut breaking Gundappa Vishwanath's old record.
Dhawan remained unbeaten on 185 runs alongwith his opening partner Murali Vijay at 83 not out, to give India a huge boost of 283 for no loss, in reply to Australia's score of 408 in the first innings of the third Test here.
Dhawan cracked his first Test ton on debut off 85 balls, and then went on to break Gundappa Vishwanath's record of highest runs by an Indian in a Test debut.
The Delhi lad's father was ecstatic in his reaction: " I am thankful to the selectors and captain Dhoni for giving my son a chance. I am happy that he he proved his mettle on his debut. We knew he would do it, when he was adjudged the Man of the Series in the Under-19 World Cup in 2004.
