Hobart, Australia: Shane Watson is fighting to prove his fitness ahead of first Ashes test in Brisbane on November 21 as he been officially ruled out of Sheffield Shield duty next week. But Australia coach Darren Lehmann is confident that allrounder will be fit for the Ashes opener.
The 32-year-old all-rounder, who suffered a hamstring injury while bowling in the seventh one-dayer on the recent tour of India, will be kept in cotton wool prior to the national team assembling in Brisbane before the first Test on November 21.
“The reports from our medical team on Shane's recovery from injury are pleasing. He is making good progress and responding well to treatment. If that continues, we have confidence that he will be fit for the first Test," Lehmann said.
“We won't be taking any chances with his preparation though, and he will miss next week's Shield match between NSW and Queensland at Allan Border Field. We want him to continue his treatment, and if all goes to plan, join the Australian team in camp ahead of first Test in Brisbane.”
Watson went on to bat in the match against India after suffering the injury, scoring 49 runs from 22 deliveries.
